I still like Garfield. It's not funny, but it's comforting. I still remember the best Garfield strip i ever read, and will now describe it in great detail.
Jon and Garfield are visiting the old folks on the family farm. I think Jon's mom or dad explains to them how potato chips are made, next to a potato plant. "After the potato is dug up, it's cleaned, sliced, deep fried in oil, then salted and bagged. That's how you get your potato chip!" Garfield then walks away looking a little sad, thinking, "I hate knowing where food comes from... all the magic is gone." The look on his face was perfect.
As a kid who didn't know how potato chips were made, that was a defining moment in my life. Who knew learning could be fun, and in such a beautiful way!
Garfield is that high on the list? Wow. I grew up with Peanuts and have been buying the Fantagraphics Peanuts books not only for myself, but my library as well.
By the way, I found your blog via myspace. I'll add it to my blog list later today. I made a note about the OCLC top 1000 last night-- mentioning Garfield's high ranking as well as those authors on the list who are from my part of the USA.

i loved garfield rather muchly! Even at the tender young age of 7 i enjoyed irony and the dark humour of Garfield. Sinfest has since taken over :)
i'm more of a 'calvin and hobbes' girl, myself. i never really got 'garfield' and 'peanuts'.
